How to Take Roller Blinds Down: A Step-by-Step Guide

How to Take Roller Blinds Down: A Step-by-Step Guide - Blinds On Location

When it comes to window covering, roller blinds offer a fine blend of functionality and aesthetics.

Many homes have them installed already, but you might want to replace them with a new set to match your space. Whether you’re dealing with standard roller blinds or cassette roller shades, understanding the whole process of removing roller blinds is important for replacement. Here, we’ll show you how to remove roller blinds quickly and easily.

Step 1: Gather the necessary tools

To remove your roller blinds, you’ll need a drill or screwdriver. You can also use a step ladder if your window roller blind is installed high on the wall.

Step 2: Prepare the blinds for removal

Roll up your blinds completely before you remove them to protect the fabric and stop it from getting in the way. If the pull string mechanism is damaged and you can’t move it from there, you can use your hands to manually turn the blind spool counter-clockwise.

Safety devices, such as a chain safety clip or a safety clamp, keep your cords permanently stretched along the wall at the maximum distance from the roller blind itself. If your blinds have these safety devices, be sure to unscrew them before the next step.

Step 3: Remove the blind from the brackets

After you pull off your safety clip devices, you can start removing the blinds. The removal process varies depending on the type of roller blind bracket type you have.

Springloaded

Most standard roller blinds are springloaded. This blind type should be removed from the pin end (the opposite side of the pulley chain drive mechanism). Hold the roller blind with one hand while you use a screwdriver or dull knife to push the pin end bracket locking mechanism back. The blind will pop out easily, allowing you to lift it off the brackets.

Serrated disc

If one end of your existing roller blinds has a disc instead of being springloaded, you need to rotate this disc counter-clockwise. Once it clicks, the blind will be unlocked. You can then pull it off, completely removing it from the bracket.

Cassette

For cassette roller blinds, you’ll need to place your hands behind the blind cassette and find the metal prongs of the brackets on the back. Push these up one side at a time. This will unlock them and allow you to lift and remove the blind cassette cover safely.

Step 4: Remove the brackets

To take out the brackets from the wall, simply remove the screw holding each piece. If the brackets are sealed, you’ll have to remove the bracket covers first.

Step 5: Store the blinds safely

Post-removal, you should store your roller shades correctly to maintain their condition. Roll them up neatly, ensuring no creases or bends in the fabric. Secure them with masking tape and store them in a dry, safe place away from direct sunlight.

Additional tips for a successful removal

Handling multiple blinds: When dealing with multiple blinds, it’s advisable to work on one blind at a time to avoid confusion. Labelling each blind and its corresponding brackets and screws can be a great help.

Prepping for reinstallation: If you intend to install new blinds or reinstall the existing ones, keep the mounting bracket and other hardware organised and in good condition.

Fill in screw holes: If you don’t plan on installing any new blinds for a while, fill any holes left behind from screws with spacking paste. Once it’s dry, you can apply a paint finish to match your wall.
